Christians are likely to be scapegoated by Islamist groups and the Muslim Brotherhood. Cairo (AsiaNews) - More than a hundred Christian families have fled El Arish in the Sinai after receiving death threats from Islamist groups following the fall of Mohamed Morsi. On 6 July, a 39-year-old priest, Fr Mina Haroan Abboud, was killed. On 11 July, the body of another Christian, a merchant from Sheikh Zowayd, was found decapitated. No Christians are left in the towns of Rafah and Sheikh Zowayd. The Sinai Peninsula has always been a home for Islamist groups, many of them linked to Hamas in Gaza. For decades, they have fought against the Egyptian army as it tried to stop weapon supplies and smuggling into the Gaza Strip. Under Morsi and the Brotherhood, the army had reduced pressure on them but now the military is back in force following the fall of Hosni Mubarak's successor. In the few days since Morsi's removal, the Sinai has seen dozens of attacks against police stations, army checkpoints, and individual members of the Armed Forces. But attacks have also been carried out against the Christians, "guilty" of supporting Morsi's fall.

In many pro-Morsi manifestations organised recently by the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Tayeb is branded as a "traitor." The Coptic patriarch has also been accused of betraying Egypt. Three days ago in Heliopolis, at least 2,000 young members of the Muslim Brotherhood wrote "Down with Tawadros" on the walls of a (Catholic) church during a demonstration that lasted several hours. It is likely that the Coptic minority will be scapegoated for President Morsi's fall and the Brotherhood's loss of power.

Three days ago, the Christian village of Dabaaya was attacked by a group of armed men who burnt 23 houses and killed four Christians. One of them, Emile Nessim, had worked hard to collect the signatures for the Tamarod (rebel) movement that led to Morsi's fall. On 9 July, the Mar Mina Church in Port Said was riddled with bullets by a group of unknown gunmen. In recent days, a group of Islamists drew crosses on some shops owned by Egyptian Copts in Minya (250 km south of Cairo). People are afraid that this 'Nazi-style' gesture might be the prelude of a terrorist attack against the targeted buildings.

The peaceful demonstration, which had begun in Istiklal Street, was organised after the government imposed restrictions on architects and engineers. Protesters also clashed with local merchants, tired by 40 days of continuous protests. Last Wednesday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Justice and Development Party Party (AKP), moved to curb the power of the Chamber of Turkish Architects and Engineers (TMMOB) by stripping it of the power to grant final approval to urban planning projects, prompting opposition charges that he is waging a vendetta against the group for its participation in the protests that began on 31 May.

The TMMOB, which represents some 400,000 professionals, joined the protest movement after it came out against the government plan for Gezi Park, which included building a shopping centre and rebuilding Ottoman-era barracks. As part of its action, the TMMOB launched a lawsuit that forced the government to suspend the project. The wave of demonstrations that has been sweeping Turkey for more than 40 days began with a protest by some environmentalists against the destruction of Gezi Park, the green lung of old Istanbul, eventually morphing into an open challenge to the ruling AKP and its leader. Five people have lost their lives during the protests, the latest is a young man of 19, who succumbed last Wednesday after a month in hospital.

Muslim youth in the village then attacked Farid and burned three houses belonging to Copts. Residents said that the incident was sparked by a conflict between Sedqy and his Coptic friends, and that it did not have any religious or political dimension.

She held out her hand. "Please help", she said. Magda took the woman's hand, and led her to a waiting car. And that was the last Magda saw of her family for a week. The 19-year-old student became, on June 2, another among the hundreds of Egyptian Christians caught up in a wave of kidnappings since the fall of the Mubarak government in 2011. Precise figures are elusive, partly because of the general breakdown of law enforcement across Egypt since the 2011 revolution, and partly because some kidnappings are never reported. In one province alone, Minya, more than 150 people have been kidnapped during the past two years, according to the Associated Press, which cited an anonymous Interior Ministry official.World Watch Monitor.

Nationwide, the ministry said the number of kidnappings grew by 145 per cent from 2011 to 2012. The Association of Victims of Abduction and Forced Disappearance claims to have registered 500 cases across Egypt since early 2011 in which Coptic Christian girls have been kidnapped. Christians aren't the only victims. The wealthy -- a group where Egypt's Coptic Christians have been well represented -- are natural targets. Many of the kidnappings have occurred in the country's southern regions, where the concentration of Christians is higher. Church leaders and human-rights activists say Egypt's government, which until this week had been dominated at the federal and regional levels by the Muslim Brotherhood, created room for criminals to prey on Christians with little fear of prosecution.

Christian frustration was just one of the grievances that millions of Egyptians took to the streets on Sunday. Fed up with a crumbling economy, fuel shortages, lawlessness and a government built upon an Islamic constitution, the protests drove President Mohamed Morsi out of office. Whether the pace of kidnappings changes during the transition to a new government is anyone's guess. A week before the protests, World Watch Monitor spoke with two Christian families whose daughters were kidnapped. According to them, here is what happened: Magda.

Orthodox Coptic priest killed in Sinai
AsiaNews sources confirm the shooting. Fr Mina Abboud Haroan was killed by a group of armed men, probably Islamists.

Cairo (AsiaNews) - A group of Islamist militants killed Mina Haroan Abboud, a 39-year-old Orthodox Coptic priest, in el-Arish, Sinai Peninsula. AsiaNews sources have confirmed the story.

The murder took place today, in the early afternoon. A group of men, probably Islamic extremists, stepped out of a car and stopped the priest as he walked in the street. After shooting the clergyman at point blank, they fled.

Fr Abboud was immediately taken to hospital but died a few hours later.

Meanwhile, tensions are rising across the country after yesterday's pro-Morsi demonstrations. Sources told AsiaNews that the Muslim Brotherhood is taking its revenge.

In Cairo, people are fighting on rooftops, and Brotherhood members are hunting down young organisers of the 30 June mass rally."They are going house to house, pointing rifles and machineguns. They are attacking with all sorts of weapons," witnesses said.

The Coptic patriarch has also been accused of betraying Egypt.

"Tensions are high," Christian sources in Egypt told AsiaNews, also because the Brotherhood, aided by infiltrated jihadists, is planning a series of anti-Christian terrorist attacks.

Some sources note however that in general, after Morsi's removal, there has been a greater sense of reconciliation between Muslims and Christians, "a stronger solidarity against extremism and for national unity".

Sinai, ucciso sacerdote copto ortodosso

KAZAKHSTAN - ITALY
From being Nazarbaev's minister to political foe, the tale of Mukhtar Ablyazov
In charge of the much-coveted Energy Ministry in 1998, he was imprisoned for "political opposition". Here is the tale of the controversial dissident who once belonged to Kazakh President Nazarbayev's elite.

Astana (AsiaNews) - Mukhtar Ablyazov, the Kazakh dissident at the centre of an international controversy after Italy extradited his wife and daughter to Kazakhstan at the end of May, began his political career in 1998 as Energy minister. The Kazakh president thought he had found in him a member of the country's future political elite. However, Ablyazov eventually broke ranks with the government, complaining about corruption, and set up the country's first opposition party. His falling out, which some describe as "self-serving", ended in his arrest.

During his stay in Kazakhstan's notorious Derzhavinsk, Mukhtar Ablayazov was kept in isolation, beaten and denied access to his lawyers.

In May 2004, after serving 10 months of a six-year sentence, President Nursultan Nazarbayev pardoned him following demands from his family and the international community.

Ablyazov also agreed to give up his political ambitions in exchange for his release. Once free, he got back in business, climbed to the top of the BTA, Kazakhstan's largest bank, but also spent millions of dollars in the past decade funding opposition groups and independent media, rekindling President Nazarbayev's enmity.

In 2009, BTA Bank found itself in a serious crisis and the Kazakh president, in order to nationalise the bank, accused Ablyazov and his officials of embezzling US$ 6 billion.

On 2 February of the same year, the state bought a 78 per cent stake in the bank, but Ablyazov had already fled to London, where he was granted political asylum in 2011.

In London, Ablyazov and his family lived sumptuously but eventually he fled England too, ostensibly to avoid a jail sentence for failing to provide information about his financial assets. Lawyers for Ablyazov insisted though that he left the UK after receiving a death threat.

Radio Free Europe has described Mukhtar Ablyazov as a 'wild '90s" oligarch, who took advantage of the break-up of the former Soviet Union through his connections with Nazarbayev.

Now he is the president's number one political enemy.

KAZAKISTAN – ITALIA
